take advice on how to be happy

Open the window in the morning, take a deep breath and say in a very serious voice: “Hmm… Tuesday. Lightly grey, with subtle notes of hope.” Nobody knows what that means. That’s exactly why it works.

Keep one marshmallow in the cupboard for “emergency happiness.” When something small and good happens (a green light, a found pair of socks), eat it with the face of someone who just won Eurovision.

Every evening, as you put on your soft slippers, announce: “The day is officially over. Everything else is a bonus.” Slippers are the border between the world and you. Respect them.

Hunt for pink things

On your way to work, count everything pink and yellow you see. No point, no prize, but your brain switches from “everything’s bad” to “oh look, a yellow roof.” Whoever spots the most bunnies wins.

Give your day a soundtrack

Pick one song as the official theme of today and play it every time something mildly heroic happens: you answered an email, you found your keys, you didn’t cry at the self-checkout. Life is a movie. You’re the main character. Act accordingly.

Hug something unreasonably soft

Once a day, hug the softest thing within reach: a cat, a blanket, a stranger’s sweater (ask first). Hold it for a full 10 seconds. Scientists say hugs release happy chemicals. We say it just feels nice and that’s science enough.
